Mkhitar Gosh

 

(also Mechitar Goch). Born 1120(?) in Gandzak; died 1213 in the village of Nor-Getik, present-day Gosh. Armenian thinker and literary and public figure.

Mkhitar Gosh wrote some ten works, the most important of which are his Fables, published in 1790, and the first Armenian law code. He was a precursor of the Armenian Renaissance. His fables, dealing with social themes, a novelty for that time, praise virtue and labor and denounce vice.
