Tsinger, Nikolai Vasil’evich

Born May 11 (23), 1866, in Moscow; died May 18, 1923, in Kharkov. Soviet botanist.

Tsinger graduated from Moscow University in 1890. In 1895 he joined the faculty of the University of Kiev, and in 1903 he became a professor at the Novoaleksandriia Institute of Agriculture and Forestry, which was transferred to Kharkov in 1914. Tsinger’s experimental studies on species formation in specialized weeds of flax (false flax and spurry) and on the formation of seasonal races in Rhinanthus were the first Russian works on biosystematics. Tsinger was awarded the Lenin Prize posthumously in 1928.
