Nikolai Vinogradov

Born Dec. 13 (26), 1905, in the village of Surikha, in present-day Ivanovo Raion, Kostroma Oblast. Admiral since 1954. Member of the CPSU since 1930.

Vinogradov graduated from the Frunze Higher Naval School in 1930 and from the Naval Academy in 1939. Until 1933 he served on submarines of the Black Sea Fleet; and from 1933 to 1936 he was commander of several submarines of the Pacific Fleet. From 1939 he was chief of staff and commander of submarine brigades of the Baltic and then of the Northern Fleet. During the Great Patriotic War he commanded a submarine brigade and then was commander of the submarine branch of the Northern Fleet and in 1943-45 deputy commander and commander of the submarine branch of the navy. From 1945 to 1948 he held high posts in the Baltic and Pacific fleets. In 1948-53 he was deputy chief of naval operations, in 1950-53 deputy minister of the navy, in 1953-58 deputy commander in chief of the navy, and in 1958-62 deputy chief of the general staff of the Armed Forces. Since 1962 he has been chief of naval educational institutions. Vinogradov has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, five Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Ushakov First Class, the Order of the Red Star, and medals.
