Fontana, Oskar Maurus

Born Apr. 13, 1889, in Vienna; died there May 5, 1969. Austrian writer.

Fontana studied at the University of Vienna. He took part in World War I. His neoromantic plays The Tale of Silence (1910) and The Foster Brothers (1912) are important in the development of Austrian expressionism. The novels The Awakening (1919) and Prisoner of the Earth (1928) are works of social criticism, and the novels The Way Through the Mountain (1936), Angel of Mercy (1950), and Breathing Fire (1954) deal with major achievements of science and labor. Fontana also wrote many essays on contemporary Austrian theatrical figures.
