Norway’s first university, founded in 1811. In 1973 the university had faculties of theology, law, medicine, history and philosophy, mathematics and natural sciences, dentistry, and social sciences and institutes of psychology (founded in 1908), economics (1932), education (1936), social sciences (1950), sociology (1950), and political science (1957). Affiliated with the university are a geographic society (1889) and a mathematics society (1918). The university library has about 2 million volumes. In the 1972–73 academic year the university had a student body of 14,000 and a faculty of 1,200, including 224 professors.
