Mgvimevi

a group of Paleolithic caves near the village of the same name in Chiatura Raion, Georgian SSR. The caves were investigated by S. N. Zamiatnin in 1934 and N. Z. Berdzenishvili in 1940. The cultural remains (stone and bone tools and the bones of animals) that have been found in the caves date from the Upper Paleolithic period and are approximately contemporaneous with the early stage of the Magdalenian culture of Western Europe. Paleolithic engravings have been preserved beneath the stalagmite crust on the wall of one of the rock overhangs. The engravings are schematic symbols consisting of deeply cut intersecting lines.
