Mahlon Pitney


Pitney, Mahlon

(1858–1924) Supreme Court justice; born in Morristown, N.J. He served the U.S. House of Representatives (Rep., N.J.; 1895–99) and in the New Jersey legislature (1899–1901). He was a state supreme court judge (1901–08) when President William Taft appointed him to the U.S. Supreme Court (1912–22). He was a known conservative and opposed organized labor.
