Nikolai Voronikhin

Voronikhin, Nikolai Nikolaevich

Born July 5 (17), 1882, in Gatchina; died Mar. 18, 1956, in Leningrad. Soviet botanist specializing in mycology, phytopathology, and algology. Doctor of biological sciences (1934). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1949).

Voronikhin graduated from St. Petersburg University in 1907. He worked in the Caucasus from 1912 to 1922, at the Central Botanical Gardens (St. Petersburg) from 1922, and at the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1931. Voronikhin taught in several institutions of higher learning in Leningrad and Tbilisi. His main works are devoted to fungi and fungus diseases of crops of Transcaucasia and also to the algae of the Black Sea and the freshwater algae of European parts of the USSR. He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and medals.
