Latvian White Swine

a breed of meat-type (bacon-type) swine developed in the Latvian SSR and recognized in 1967.

The Latvian white has a sturdy constitution. The trunk is long and the hams are well developed. The liveweight of the best boars is 285–318 kg and of the sows, 258 kg. There are 11 or 12 young per farrow, and the milk yield comes to 70–80 kg. The breed is used for meat and bacon fattening. When fattened for bacon, the young attain a liveweight of 95 kg at the age of 192 days, with an average daily increase of 649 g at 3.8 fodder units per kg weight increase. The meat yield of the carcass is 55 percent. The Latvian white is used for commercial crossbreeding with the Landrace breed. It is raised in the Latvian SSR and imported by the other republics. Selection work is directed at improving the bacon qualities.
