a district in Rumania, located in the eastern foothills of the Eastern Carpathians, in the Bistrita River basin. Area, 5,900 sq km; population, 508,600 (1970). Its administrative center is the city of Piatra-Neamt.

The economy of the district is built on both industry and agriculture. Major industries include chemicals metallurgy, lumbering and woodworking, and paper and pulp. Construction materials, foodstuffs, textiles, and metal products are also produced. Neamt is served by hydroelectric power plants on the Bistrita River. Major crops include grain (particularly corn) and sugar beets. Vegetables are also raised. Livestock consists primarily of cattle and sheep.
