Maiboroda, Georgiiillarionovich

Born Nov. 18 (Dec. 1), 1913, in the khutor (farmstead) of Pelekhovshchina, present-day Globino Raion, Poltava Oblast. Soviet composer; People’s Artist of the USSR (1960).

Maiboroda was a member of L. N. Revutskii’s course in composition at the Kiev Conservatory, graduating in 1941; he completed graduate study in 1949. From 1952 to 1958 he taught courses on music theory at the conservatory. In his music he is drawn toward heroic and patriotic themes. He has written the operas Milana (1957), Arsenal (1960; T. G. Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR, 1964), and Taras Shevchenko (1964), all of which have been presented at the T. G. Shevchenko Ukrainian Theater of Opera and Ballet in Kiev, as well as Yaro-slav the Wise (composed 1973). Maiboroda’s other works include two symphonies (1940, 1952) and symphonic poems, a concerto for voice and orchestra (1969), vocal-symphonic works, choruses, art songs, songs, and other compositions. He was a deputy to the seventh and eighth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. Maiboroda has been awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
