Maikal
mountains in India, in the northern part of the Hindustan Peninsula. Length, approximately 250 km; elevation, to 1,127 m (Mount Bhamangarh). They are composed of gneisses, overlain in places by basaltic lavas, and broken up by faults. The plateau-like peaks and steep slopes are dissected by the headwaters of the Narbada and Son rivers and the left tributaries of the Mahanadi. Monsoon deciduous forests with teak grow on the peaks.
