launching ways[′lȯn·chiŋ ‚wāz] (civil engineering) Two (or more) sets of long, heavy timbers arranged longitudinally under the bottom of a ship during building and launching, with one set on each side, and sloping toward the water; the lower set, or ground ways, remain stationary and support the upper set, or sliding ways, which carry the weight of the ship after the shores and keel blocks are removed. |
