Launch Platform
a mobile or stationary mechanical device that provides a rigid support for a rocket and holds it in the required position prior to launch. The support structure of the launch platform has the form of a frame mounted on several vertical supports, columns, pillars, or legs. One of the first designs for a launch platform was developed in the USSR in the 1930’s to launch the experimental liquid-propellant rocket RLA-1. When in working position, the launch platform is secured to the foundation frame of the launch pad. It is equipped with devices to hold and raise the rocket to a vertical position. Some launch platforms have a rotating mechanism for azimuth guidance. Between the supports there is an exhaust deflector that guides the supersonic, high-temperature exhaust of the engine in a direction safe for the rocket and ground equipment.
