Established: 1978.
Location:35 miles east of Ellsworth, Maine.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, trails.
Activities:Hiking, hunting, berry picking, wildlife observation, education programs.
Special Features:Eight lighthouse islands have been transferred to the refuge. Several species of seabirds nest on these islands.
Habitats: More than 7,400 acres made up of 47 offshore islands and 3 coastal parcels, spanning more than 150 miles of Maine coastline.
Access: Mainland portions of the refuge are open from dawn to dusk; islands are closed to public entry during the nesting season.
Wild life: Colonial seabirds including terns, puffins, razorbills, storm-petrels, laughing gulls, black guillemots, bald eagles, and common eiders; also white-tailed deer, and porcupine.
