Orthotomus

Orthotomus

(tailorbirds), a genus of birds of the family Sylviidae of the order Passeriformes. The body reaches a length of 11–14 cm. The bill is the same length as the head. The back is greenish, and the top of the head is red or, less often, gray or black. There are six species, distributed in southern Asia from Hindustan to the Philippines. Tailorbirds live in forests or gardens. To erect a nest on a tree or shrub they sew together the edges of one or several leaves with plant fibers or silk thread. The resulting pocket is filled with soft plant hairs. A clutch contains two to five mottled eggs, which hatch in 11 or 12 days. Tailor-birds feed on insects.
