Orudzhev, Sabit Ataevich

Born May 18 (31), 1912, in Baku; died Apr. 20, 1981, in Moscow. Soviet state figure. Hero of Socialist Labor (1980). Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR (1967). Member of the CPSU from 1939.

The son of a worker, Orudzhev graduated from the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute in 1936. He became a village teacher in 1928. Beginning in 1936 he held a series of engineering and administrative positions in the petroleum industry. He was deputy minister of the petroleum industry of the USSR from 1949 to 1953 and from 1955 to 1957. From 1957 to 1959 he served as chairman of the Council of the National Economy and as deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR. From 1962 to 1965, Orudzhev held several posts on state committees under Gosplan (State Planning Committee) of the USSR, serving as deputy chairman of the state committees for the fuel industry and for the chemical and petroleum industries and first deputy chairman of the State Committee for the Petroleum Extraction Industry. From 1965 to 1972 he was first deputy minister of the petroleum extraction and petroleum industries of the USSR. Orudzhev was appointed minister of the gas industry of the USSR in 1972. He became a candidate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1976.

A deputy to the third, fifth, ninth, and tenth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Orudzhev received the Lenin Prize in 1970 and the State Prize of the USSR in 1950 and 1951. Orudzhev was awarded three orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, four other orders, and various medals.
