Othon I of Bavaria

Born June 1, 1815, in Salzburg; died July 26, 1867, in Bamberg. King of Greece from 1832 to 1862.

A member of the Bavarian Wittelsbach dynasty, Othon was offered the Greek throne by France, with the consent of Great Britain and Russia. He arrived in Greece in 1833, but for the first two years the country was ruled by three regents, high officials of the Bavarian royal court. An armed uprising of the Athens garrison in September 1843 compelled Othon to convoke a national assembly, which adopted a constitution providing for the formation of a Greek national government. After he was overthrown during the bourgeois revolution of 1862 (October 23), Othon returned to his native land.
