DictionarySeevesicleotic vesicle
vesicle [ves´ĭ-k'l] 1. a small bladder or sac containing liquid.2. a small circumscribed elevation of the epidermis containing a serous fluid; a small blister.allantoic vesicle the internal hollow portion of the allantois.auditory vesicle a detached ovoid sac formed by closure of the auditory pit in the early embryo, from which the percipient parts of the inner ear develop.brain v's the five divisions of the closed neural tube in the developing embryo, including the telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon, metencephalon, and myelencephalon.brain v's, primary the three earlier subdivisions of the embryonic neural tube, including the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain.brain v's, secondary the four brain vesicles formed by specialization of the forebrain and of the hindbrain in later embryonic development.chorionic vesicle the chorion of a mammal.encephalic v's brain vesicles.germinal vesicle the fluid-filled nucleus of an oocyte toward the end of prophase of its meiotic division.lens vesicle a vesicle formed from the lens pit of the embryo, developing into the crystalline lens.olfactory vesicle 1. the vesicle in the embryo that later develops into the olfactory bulb and tract.2. a bulbous expansion at the distal end of an olfactory cell, from which the olfactory hairs project.optic vesicle an evagination on either side of the forebrain of the early embryo, from which the percipient parts of the eye develop.otic vesicle auditory vesicle.seminal vesicle paired sacculated pouches attached to the posterior urinary bladder; the duct of each joins the ipsilateral ductus deferens to form the ejaculatory duct.umbilical vesicle the pear-shaped expansion of the yolk sac growing out into the cavity of the chorion, joined to the midgut by the yolk stalk.o·tic ves·i·cleone of the paired sacs of invaginated ectoderm that develop into the membranous labyrinth of the internal ear. Synonym(s): acoustic vesicle, auditory vesiclevesicle (ves'i-kel) [L. vesicula, a little bladder] A small blister-like elevation on the skin containing serous fluid. Vesicles may vary in diameter from a few millimeters to a centimeter. They may be round, transparent, opaque, or dark elevations of the skin, sometimes containing seropurulent or bloody fluid. In sudamina, they result from sweat that cannot escape from the skin; in herpes, they are mounted on an inflammatory base, having no tendency to rupture but associated with burning pain. In herpes zoster, they follow dermatomes. In dermatitis venenata, they result from contact with poison ivy or oak and are accompanied by great itching. They are also seen in dermatitis herpetiformis or multiformis. In impetigo contagiosa, they occur, esp. in children, in discrete form, flat and umbilicated, filled with straw-colored fluid, with no tendency to break. They dry up, forming yellow crusts with little itching. They are also seen in vesicular eczema, molluscum contagiosum, miliaria (prickly heat or heat rash), chickenpox, smallpox, and scabies. See: herpes; miliariaallantoic vesicleThe hollow, enlarged part of the allantois, esp. in birds and reptiles.auditory vesicleThat portion of the cerebral vesicle from which the exterior ear is formed. Synonym: otic vesicleblastodermic vesicleBlastocyst.brain vesicleOne of the five embryonic subdivisions of the brain.cerebral vesicleBrain vesicle.chorionic vesicleThe outer villus-covered layer of the early embryo. It encloses the embryo, amnion, umbilical cord, and yolk stalk. compound vesicleMultilocular vesicle.encephalic vesicleBrain vesicle.germinal vesiclePurkinje vesicle. See: Purkinje, Johannes E. vonlens vesicleThe embryonic vesicle formed from the lens pit. It develops into the lens of the eye. multilocular vesicleA vesicle that contains multiple chambers.optic vesicleA hollow outgrowth from the lateral aspects of the embryonic brain. The retinae and optic nerves develop from these paired vesicles. otic vesicleAuditory vesicle.primary brain vesicleOne of the three earliest subdivisions of the embryonic neural tube.seminal vesicleOne of two saccular glands below the urinary bladder in males. The duct from each joins the vas deferens on its own side to form the ejaculatory duct. The seminal vesicle produces an alkaline, fructose-rich secretion that enhances sperm motility and nourishes the sperm. synaptic vesicleA membranous sac located within the presynaptic membrane of an axon terminal and containing a neurotransmitter.transfer vesicleAn intracellular vesicle that carries proteins from one organelle to another; e.g., from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus.umbilical vesicleThe portion of the embryonic yolk sac outside the body cavity. |
