Micael Agricola

Agricola, Micael

Born circa 1508 or 1510; died April 9, 1557. Head of the Reformation in Finland and father of Finnish literature.

From 1536 to 1539, Agricola studied at Wittenberg University under Luther and Melanchthon. In 1554 he became the first Protestant Lutheran bishop in Finland at Å bo (now Turku). Agricola published the first primer in Finnish (1542), translations into Finnish of a number of prayer books, the New Testament (1548), parts of the Old Testament (1551–52), and other religious works.
