National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, NHANESA survey of the population of the U.S., conducted periodically by the National Center for Health Statistics, that reviews the height, weight, and nutritional habits of Americans (and other demographic, environmental, and socioeconomic variables) and links those data to health outcomes, such as the incidence of heart disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity, osteoporosis, psychiatric illnesses, sexually transmitted illnesses, and stroke. Other accomplishments of NHANES have included the development of normal growth charts for children and infants and the reduction of blood lead levels among this population and the diseases caused by excessive exposure to lead.
