MMP11

A gene on chromosome 22q11.23 that encodes matrix metalloproteinase 11. Unlike other matrix metalloproteinases, which are secreted as inactive proproteins and activated when cleaved by extracellular proteinases, MMP11 is activated intracellularly by a furin endopeptidase. It cleaves alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor, but only weakly acts on the structural proteins of the extracellular matrix.
Molecular pathology
MMP11 may play a key role in the progression of epithelial malignancies, and is specifically expressed in stromal cells of breast carcinomas.
