Michael Shishman
Michael Shishman
Year of birth unknown; died July 28, 1330, near Velbuzhd. Bulgarian tsar who ruled from 1323 to 1330; son of Prince Shishman of Vidin.
Michael conducted an active foreign policy. He intervened in the civil conflict between Byzantine emperor Andronicus II and Andronicus the Younger, the future emperor Andronicus III. He also concluded a military alliance with Byzantium against Serbia. In a battle against the Serbs near Velbuzhd, he was wounded and taken prisoner and died soon afterward.
