a technique in which the presence of a chemical is quantified by using living organisms, rather than by carrying out chemical analysis. For example, the amount of a toxic substance (such as an insecticide) in a sample could be estimated by comparing mortality in organisms treated with the unknown sample, against an agreed standard figure of mortality in organisms treated with known quantities of the substance.
