Newhouse, S. I.

Newhouse, S. I. (Samuel Irving)

(1895–1979) publisher; born in New York City. Starting as an aide to a New Jersey judge, he became manager of the judge's local paper, acquired control of his own newspaper, the Staten Island Advance, and built a large chain of papers through acquisitions; he kept them going through cost-cutting economies and often dealt harshly with unions. A major philanthropist, he founded the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in 1964.
