New iPad

New iPad

The third-generation iPad. Introduced in March 2012 to an audience expecting an "iPad 3," the device was given the moniker "New iPad" as a fresh branding approach. Apple's Retina Display was included, and resolution was doubled from 1024x768 to 2048x1536 to offer the highest resolution for a mobile device at that time. In September 2012, iOS 6 added Siri to the iPad (see iOS versions and Siri).

The New iPad increased HD video recording from 720p to 1080p and greatly improved the camera. The rear-facing "iSight" camera jumped to 5 megapixels and takes a much better photo than the 0.7 megapixel iPad 2 camera. Bluetooth Version 4.0 "low-energy" support was also added. In the U.S., AT&T and Verizon offered 4G cellular service for New iPad models. See iPad and Retina Display.
