Loboda, Grigorii

Loboda, Grigorii

Year of birth unknown; died May 1596. Hetman of a rebel army and one of the leaders of a peasant and cossack rebellion in the Ukraine in 1594–96.

In the spring of 1594, Loboda led a cossack detachment into Moldavia to fight against the Turkish invaders. In October 1594 and the spring of 1595 he conducted successful campaigns in Moldavia with S. Nalivaiko. Because he advocated compromise with the noble (szlachta) government of Poland, the cossacks suspected him of treason and executed him during the siege of a cossack camp by Polish forces at Solonitsa, near Lubny.
