Norval, Morris

(1923– ) criminologist, scholar; born in Auckland, New Zealand. He served in the Australian Army in the Pacific (1941–45), and, becoming a lawyer, practiced before the Victorian Supreme Court, the South Australian Supreme Court, and the High Court of Australia. He emigrated to America to teach law and criminology at the University of Chicago (1964). Adviser to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, he chaired the National Institute of Corrections (1986–89). He was coeditor of Crime and Justice: An Annual Review of Research, and author of numerous articles and books including a book of short stories, The Brothel Boy and Other Parables of The Law (1992).
