Layer Plowing
Layer Plowing
the tillage of several layers of soil, involving displacement of the soil horizons. Layer plowing is used to fundamentally improve solonetz and podzol soils. It is done with special plows to a depth of 40 cm once every five or six years. In other years the soil is tilled to the usual depth.
Layer plowing causes solonetz soils to improve naturally, without synthetic fertilizers, and enhances their physical properties. Podzol soils usually undergo other procedures along with layer plowing; for example, lime and organic fertilizers are applied and grass is planted.
