Mozambique Basin

 

a depression in the bottom of the Indian Ocean south of the Mozambique Channel. Bounded on the west by the continental slope of Africa, on the east by the island of Madagascar and the submarine Madagascar Range, on the north by the slope of the Mozambique Channel, and on the south by the West Indian Range. Length, about 2,700 km; width, up to 550 km; maximum depth, 6,046 m. The bottom of the Mozambique Basin is mainly a rolling plain; in the south it is flat and hilly. Sediments include foraminiferous silt and, in the south, red clay.
