a city, the administrative center of Mozdok Raion, Severnaia Osetiia ASSR. Located on the left bank of the Terek River, Mozdok is a station on the Prokhladnaia-Gudermes railroad line, 91 km north of Ordzhonikidze. Population, 32,000 (1970).

The city was founded in 1763 in the locality of Mazdogu, which in Kabardin means “dense forest,” as an outpost in the central sector of the Caucasus frontier. Mozdok has a curtain factory, a machinery repair plant, and a brickyard; the local food industry features a brewery, a winery, a dairy, and a meat-packing plant. A machine technology technicum is also located there. The Terek-Kuma Canal originates from the Terek River at Mozdok.
