myelodysplasic syndrome

myelodysplasic syndrome

A group of uncommon bone marrow disorders featuring reduced blood cell production with abnormal granular white cells, especially the neutrophil polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and resulting in ANAEMIA which is very difficult to treat. The neutrophils have reduced activity against organisms, so there is increased risk of infection. The syndrome affects the elderly and tends to progress to acute myeloid LEUKAEMIA. Bone marrow transplantation can produce long-term remission in younger patients.
