Local Councils

(in Russian, pomestnye sobory), conferences of the bishops of an autocephalous Christian church or of a metropolitanate, archbishopric, or province, for the purpose of discussing problems related to dogma, worship, church administration, and discipline. Sometimes, the local councils are attended by other representatives of the clergy, as well as by the bishops. Decisions of a local council are binding only for the ecclesiastical territorial unit that convoked the council.
