Mndoiants, Ashot Ashotovich
Born Dec. 28, 1909 (Jan. 10, 1910), in Batumi; died Sept. 29, 1966, in Moscow. Soviet architect.
Mndoiants studied in Odessa in the department of architecture of the Polytechnic School of Fine Arts and at the Institute of Civil Engineering and Communal Construction (1928–32). Between 1932 and 1935 he worked in Batumi, serving as chief architect in 1934 and 1935. He later worked in Moscow.
Mndoiants’ works in Moscow include a high-rise apartment house on Vosstanie Square (1950–54; design was awarded State Prize of the USSR, 1949), the Kremlin Palace of Congresses (1959–61; Lenin Prize, 1962), the plan of Kalinin Prospect (1964–69) with its building complex housing the Council for Economic Assistance (1969), the Oktiabr’ Motion Picture Theater (1967), and numerous stores and restaurants. All of these designs were done in collaboration with the architect M. V. Posokhin and others. Mndoiants was awarded three orders and various medals.
