McCarran, Patrick (Anthony)

(1876–1954) judge, U.S. senator; born in Reno, Nev. A prominent lawyer and judge, he was elected to the U.S. Senate (Dem., Nev.; 1933–54). A conservative opponent of the New Deal, he won fame in the McCarthy era as an outspoken anti-Communist, sponsoring the Internal Security Act of 1950 and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952.
