McCarthy, (Joseph Vincent) Joe

(1887–1978) baseball manager; born in Philadelphia. He was manager of the Chicago Cubs (1926–30), New York Yankees (1931–46), and Boston Red Sox (1948–50). His Yankee clubs, led by Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, appeared in eight World Series and won seven of them. Nicknamed "Marse Joe," he was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1957.
