local enhanced service

An enhanced service which all Local Health Boards should commission or provide to a local population of patients in the UK but which is not mandatory. Because Enhanced services are non-core general medical services (GMS), the GPs in a particular area are paid by the local primary care trust (PCT) for providing LESs over and above their salaries as GPs. Key features of Enhanced Services:
(1) Essential, additional or out-of-hours services delivered to a higher specified standard.
(2) Services not provided through essential or additional services, which include more specialised services provided by health professionals, services at the primary/secondary care interface or services meeting specific local health needs.
