Abduction Therapy
A standard method for managing developmental dysplasia of the hip in infants under 6 months of age, which aims to:(1) reduce the hip (replace the femoral head into the acetabulum);
(2) stabilise the joint to properly position the femoral head in the acetabulum; and
(3) resolve chondro-osseous dysplasia.
Early abduction therapy capitalises on the reciprocal development of the femur and acetabulum, and the hip’s ability to remodel and grow normally; by maintaining the hip in a position of flexion and abduction, the femoral head is held in its proper position while the acetabulum grows and the surrounding ligaments tighten.
