Bashir Shihab

(also Beshir Shihab), Lebanese rulers.

Bashir I Shihab, founder of the Shihab dynasty. Ruled from 1697 to 1707.

Bashir II Shihab. Born 1767; died Dec. 29, 1850. Grand emir from 1788 (in some sources, 1789) to 1840 (with interruptions).

Bashir II Shihab fought against feudal separatism. He concluded an agreement with the Egyptian ruler Muhammad Ali in 1822 and supported the military actions of Egyptian troops in Syria in 1832–33 and 1839–40. As a result of anti-Egyptian uprisings in Syria and Lebanon and the subsequent hostilities between the Egyptians and the Turks, who were supported by the British Navy, Bashir was deposed by the Turkish government and exiled to Malta by the British command. He died in Asia Minor. His remains were removed to Lebanon in 1946.
