Bashkadyklar
Bashkadyklar
(today, Başgedikler), a village in Turkey, 35 km east of Kars, near which a battle took place between Russian and Turkish troops on Nov. 19 (Dec. 1), 1853, during the Crimean War (1853–56). The Turkish army retreating toward Kars under the command of the seraskir Ahmet Paşa (36,000 men, 46 cannons) tried to halt the Russian troops led by General V. O. Bebutov (about 10,000 men, 32 cannons) at Bashkadyklar. By an energetic attack the Russian troops, despite the stubborn resistance of the Turks, overran their right flank and routed them. The Turks lost more than 6,000 men and the Russians about 1,500.
