Nioradze, Georgii Kaplanovich
Born Nov. 30, 1886, in the village of Shrosha, in what is now Zestafoni Raion, Georgian SSR; died Dec. 10, 1951, in Tbilisi. Soviet Georgian archaeologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR (from 1946).
Nioradze’s work on the Stone Age in the Caucasus is of great importance. He investigated Paleolithic cave sites in western Georgia, including Deviskhvreli and Sakazhia. He also investigated numerous archaeological remains in Georgia dating from the Aeneolothic period, the Bronze Age, the Early Iron Age, and Greek and Roman times, including the sites of Didube, Mtskheta, Zemo-Avchala, Karsniskhevi, Dmanisi, Samgori, Kakheti, and Naokhvami. Nioradze is the author of several works on the ethnography of Georgia and Siberia.
