LazaretenUKlazaret[¦laz·ə¦ret]Lazareta medical institution in military units in the USSR that provides inpatient treatment for persons who do not need specialized treatment in a hospital. In some states a lazaret is a medical institution for specialized inpatient treatment. In the Middle Ages a lazaret (lazaretto, or lazar house) was the name for a refuge for persons afflicted with leprosy (which was called St. Lazarus’ disease in some countries).
