Lazǎr, Gheorghe

 

Born June 15, 1779, in Avrig, Transylvania; died Sept. 17, 1823. Figure of the Rumanian enlightenment.

Lazǎr was educated in the cities of Cluj, Sibiu, and Vienna. In 1818 he founded the first school in Walachia that used Rumanian as the language of instruction. He was sympathetic to the Walachian revolt of 1821.
