Makarska

 

a seaside climatic resort in the Socialist Republic of Croatia, in Yugoslavia; located on the Adriatic Sea, 62 km east of Split (Dalmatian coast). The climate is subtropical, with very warm summers (average temperature in July, 24°C) and very mild winters (average temperature in January, 6.8°C); precipitation is 950 mm a year. The principal means of therapy are sea bathing (from May through October); sun and air baths; warm sea, radon, and carbonate baths; and the grape cure. Persons with nontuberculous illnesses of the respiratory organs, neuroses, obesity, anemia, and other diseases receive treatment. There is a large beach with fine-grained sand. The area has a hydropathic establishment with a bathhouse and physical therapy divisions, boarding houses, hotels, and sports facilities.
