Moanda

Moanda

a mining center in Gabon, in Haut-Ogooue District. Moanda has one of the world’s largest deposits of manganese ore: estimated reserves are 200 million tons of ore with a manganese content of 50-52 percent. The Franco-American Compagnie Miniere de L’Ogooue works the deposit. In 1971, 1.8 million tons of ore were mined. The ore is shipped through the port of Pointe-Noire in the Congo, with whose railroad network the Moanda mine is linked by an aerial cableway. A steam power plant is located there.
