Lazienki

a palace and park complex in Warsaw, built in the style of early classicism. Formerly a royal residence, it is now a museum. Despite its baroque features, the palace is distinguished by severe forms and is designed on a small scale. Originally built in 1683–90 as the bathhouse of the Lubomirski princes (architect, J. Gamierski), the -Łazienki was reconstructed as a royal palace between 1784 and 1795 (architect, D. Merlini; interiors by Merlini and J. Kamsetzer). The complex also includes the White House (1774–77) and Myślewice Palace (1775–79), both designed by Merlini, with wall paintings by J. B. Plersch. In the scenic park are pavilions, colonnades, sculpture by A. Le Brun and J. Monaldi, and a bronze and stone monument to Chopin (1907–26; sculptor, W. Szymanowski). Destroyed by the Nazis in 1945, it was completely restored by 1964. Near -Łazienki is the Belvedere Palace (1818–22), designed by the architect J. Kubicki.
