LazzaronienUKLazzaronidéclassé lumpen proletariat elements in southern Italy. The first lazzaroni were the participants in the 1647 uprising in Naples led by Masaniello. In the 18th and 19th centuries the term came to signify the entire mass of poor déclassé people in southern Italy, as well as in a number of other countries. The counterrevolution used them in the struggle against the revolutionary movement, as for instance in the Bourbons’ bloody suppression of the Neapolitan revolution of 1799. |
