New Madrid Federation

the first Marxist group in Spain. It was established in 1872 by supporters of the General Council of the First International, among whom were J. Mesa y Leompart, F. Mora, and P. Iglesias, all of whom had been excluded from the Madrid Federation of the International by the Bakuninists. P. Lafargue also took an active role in the organization.

The first Spanish translation of a number of works by K. Marx and F. Engels appeared in Emancipacion, the organ of the New Madrid Federation. Marx and Engels also corresponded with the federation. The New Madrid Federation criticized the Bakuninist Alliance for Social Democracy and helped open the way to creation of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party.
