McHugh, (James Francis) Jimmy

(1896–1969) composer; born in Boston, Mass. In the 1920s and 1930s he wrote songs for Broadway revues and Harlem's Cotton Club. With lyricist Dorothy Fields he wrote the hits "I Can't Give You Anything but Love, Baby" (1928), "On the Sunny Side of the Street" (1929), and "I'm in the Mood for Love" (1935). He also worked with lyricists Gus Kahn, Ted Koehler and Harold Adamson. In the 1950s and 1960s he performed in nightclubs and television shows.
