mobile domain

mobile domain

A discrete block (domain) of amino acids which was partly conserved in evolution and underwent evolutionary modification over time to adjust to intracellular needs.
Mobile domains range from 18 residues (e.g., collagen, leucine-rich and Gla domains) to 100 residues or more (e.g., lectin-like, SH2, SH3) in length. They are divided into those with disulfide bonds (e.g., complement C9, epidermal growth factor, Fn1, Fn2 and others) and those that without (e.g., collagen-binding, Fn3, SH2 and SH3).
